PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION (ABOUT 1.0) When I first saw the System 7 Finder's " About This Macintosh" display, I thought it looked really cool. Then I tried to make it DO something, like switch me to an application when I clicked its icon. I was somewhat disappointed when nothing happened. I was even more disappointed to find I couldn't make the display appear automatically when I started up the Mac! So, out of frustration, I decided to write my own version. The result is About, a process monitor. Its appearance is an unabashed knockoff of the Finder's display; but unlike that display, you can actually use About to interact with your processes and get information on them. A little arrow appears next to the current process. Clicking an icon switches you to its process, and option-clicking an icon hides or shows that process, just like the Hide and Show commands in the application menu. You can customize the display in many ways--use large icons if you prefer, or arrange the processes by their location in memory to reveal the " holes" in your address space. Other commands allow you to monitor background-only processes, view CPU load, create an " icon palette" of your favorite applications, find a running application's location on disk, and force other processes to quit. About can also maintain a log of application activity. And as an extra added bonus for the Internet community, About warns you if you have more than 8 MB of physical RAM installed, but haven't enabled 32-bit addressing. About is FREE. --Michael May 30, 1993 [Archived as /info-mac/cfg/about-103.hqx; 105K]

Subject: [*] Attributor 1.1; a programming utility

Program: Attributor 1.1
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini (lmontalcini@pmn.it)
Price: $5 cash (shareware)

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE

Attributor is an small utility designed to make life
easier for programmers. Since the Code Warrior DR3 and the
old Think C 5 don't provide a way to set the CODE resource
attributes directly (things like " purgeable" or " preload" )
and because most of my applications want to unload the
initialization segment, I wrote this utility to stop going
into ResEdit all the time.
Attributor can change the resource attributes of a
specific resource or of a whole resource family in a single
pass. Just create an ATTR resource inside Attributor with
ResEdit and modify it to meet your needs (there's a resource
template for the 'ATTR' resource inside the Attributor
application). If you check the " Change All" option, the the
resource ID is ignored and all resources of the specified
type are changed.

New in version 1.1:
- Fat version! Runs native on Power Macs

KeyClicks is a control panel that plays some very short
sounds when you press a key. I made it because many people I
know have trouble with the PowerBook and Duo keyboards (they
have little feedback, so you can't tell whether a key was
pressed or not). The key-clicking utilities I already had
wouldn't let the hard disk spin down because they didn't
keep everything in memory.

Subject: [*] KeyQuencer 1.2; a macro utility

Program: KeyQuencer 1.2
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini (lmontalcini@pmn.it)
Keywords: Macro engine, control panel, utility
Price: $10 cash (shareware)

KeyQuencer is a powerful and solid macro engine designed
to use very little memory; it can perform complex tasks
that are invoked by a single keystroke. KeyQuencer uses a
very simple scripting approach and can be extended through
external extensions. The 47 bundled extensions provide lots
of power and can replace many common system additions with
substantial memory savings. KeyQuencer's macros can be
lauched by HyperCard, AppleScript, FileMaker Pro and any
other application that supports sending Apple Events. The
Macro Editor can now execute macros on remote Macs over a
network. Also, programmers can easily build their own
extensions and integrate them into the KeyQuencer
environment.

This is the first macro engine that's released as
shareware. It is better than commercial packages in many
ways, and it only costs $10. Don't miss it.

The Macro Editor is a simple text editor with some extra
features that allow it to cooperate with KeyQuencer either
locally or over a network. You can save macros as plain text
files and store them anywhere you like (including handy
places like the " Startup Items"  and " Apple Menu"  folders);
double-clicking a text macro file or dropping it onto the

Subject: [*] Ladmo.0.51; a Bolo robot

Hi People,

Here Ladmo 0.51, a full fledged autopilot and limited borg for Bolo.

Ladmo does pretty much everything a human player would do: claim bases,
attack tanks, enemy LGM, bases, pill boxes, repair allied pill boxes,
places pills and much more all with some degree of intelligence.

Ladmo also has some unique features such as auto-allying with other
Ladmos, a messaging system with new features, various borg functions
that let you tap into Ladmo's functions, personalities (still in
development) and the ability to use the Bolo Brain Team App to display a
map of what the tank has seen both in autopilot and borg mode.

Version 0.51 fixes a bug that can cause Ladmo to crash when an
allied pill is killed. I, John, left in some code that had not
been properly tested yet. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Please read the Read Me for a full description of features, caveats and
instructions.

Ladmo is written by John A. Wagner and Will Uther.

Thanks,

FAT VERSION - CONTAINS BOTH 680x0 AND NATIVE POWERPC CODE

List Files is a handy utility that creates a text catalog
of anything you drop on it. You can format the text in many
ways and set up file filters to look for specific files. You
may create different worksets that can be recalled either
> From a menu or by holding down some keys when you drop
things on List Files' icon, so you can switch between
cataloging your floppies and searching for big text files in
a flash. List Files can save your catalogs automatically to
different destination folders, so you don't have to save
them manually for every disk or cartridge you want to list.
It can also search entire folders very quickly to find a
specific file inside one of your catalogs.

Program: Set Startup 1.2
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini (lmontalcini@pmn.it)
Price: One postcard

Set Startup is an alternative to Apples standard Startup
Device control panel. Its main advantage is that you can
change your startup disk even if the new one is not
currently mounted on the desktop. The disk is chosen by SCSI
ID, where SCSI 0 usually represents your Macs internal hard
disk. The RAM disk/high SCSI button will make your Mac boot
> From its RAM disk if theres a bootable system on it;
otherwise, it will pick the highest SCSI device that does
have one.
PowerBook hint: if you boot from the RAM disk and unmount
your hard disk by dragging it to the trash, the disk will
never spin up again and youll save some battery (everything
you need should be inside the RAM disk, of course). You can
then use Set Startup to reset the startup disk to SCSI 0,
and youll be back to the usual startup disk at next restart
(this saves you one restart, because Apples Startup Device
control panel wont display your hard disk if its not
mounted).

Version 1.0 - 31 July 1994
Copyright 1994, by Chad Magendanz

Description

ShrinkWrap was created for four basic purposes:

1. To create DiskCopy disk images quickly and efficiently:
Using ShrinkWrap, you can create DiskCopy disk images by simply dragging
and dropping your floppy drive icons onto the ShrinkWrap icon.

2. To provide a convenient and reliable means of mounting multiple disk
images on the desktop:
Like Apple's MountImage control panel, ShrinkWrap will mount image files on
the desktop that to the system will appear identical to the original floppy
disks. However, since ShrinkWrap is an application, it will never cause
INIT conflicts and will never require any memory until it's actually run.
To mount image files, simply drag and drop the image file icons onto the
ShrinkWrap icon. Image files can even be mounted as unlocked disks by
holding down the Option key during launch.

3. To seamlessly handle image files in their archived form:
ShrinkWrap will automatically compress and decompress archived image files
on-the-fly with Aladdin's StuffIt Engine. Now that the StuffIt Engine has
been released as shareware with the DropStuff with Expander Enhancer
package, you don't have to own StuffIt Deluxe to take advantage of these
convenient compression features.

4. To provide a freely distributable alternative to Apple's DiskCopy, DART
and MountImage:
These products cannot yet legally be licensed for redistribution. Apple
Computer, Inc. is working to create a license, but until that time, you may
not legally redistribute it once you receive a copy from an authorized
Apple source.

Program: Shutdown Delay 2.03
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini (lmontalcini@pmn.it)
Price: $5 cash (shareware)

Shutdown Delay displays a dialog at Restart/Shutdown time
which gives the user five choices:
- doing nothing makes the Mac complete the original command
after a while;
- cancel smoothly returns to the calling application;
- restart restarts the Macintosh;
- shut down turns the power off or displays the
safe-shutdown alert as usual;
- force quit attempts to return to the Finder.

New in version 2.03:
- Recompiled with latest version of the compiler and
updated documentation.

Subject: [*] SoundApp 1.2.2; a sound playing utility

Enclosed you will find SoundApp 1.2.2, the latest version of my sound
playing program.

SoundApp it can play and convert the following sound formats:

SoundCap (including Huffman compressed files),
SoundEdit (including stereo files),
AIFF and AIFF-C,
System 7 Sound,
Sun Audio (AU),
NeXT .snd,
Windows WAVE,
Sound Blaster VOC,
Amiga MOD,
Amiga IFF (8SVX) (including compressed files),
Sound Designer II,
DVI ADPCM, and
any 'snd' resource file.

SoundApp also supports conversion to the following sound formats: System 7,
Sound suitcase, WAVE, AIFF/AIFF-C, and NeXT .au.

Large sounds can be played with minimal memory, and it can convert 16-bit
files to 8-bit files, if desired. It also supports true 16-bit playback of
16-bit sound files, as well as, AU and ADPCM files. Stereo playback is also
supported.

Version 1.2.2 is primarily a bug release for conversion of 'snd 's to WAVE
files. In addition, I've enabled dragging of sounds from the Play List to
other applications.

As before, SoundApp remains Freeware. For more information, please see the
built-in help/About window or the Balloon Help.

Program: Startup Player 1.02
Author: Alessandro Levi Montalcini (lmontalcini@pmn.it)
Price: One postcard

Startup Player is a definitely cool extension that plays a
sound over and over until all other extensions have loaded
and the Finder comes out. The sound must be in a Finder
sound file called " Startup Loop" inside the Extensions
folder (or in the System folder if youre running System 6).
Since youll want Startup Player to start playing early in
the startup process, you may add a space before the
extension name. If youre using some kind of startup
manager, put Startup Player among the first extensions to
load (see documentation for more info).

Subject: 520c Questions, GV Gold, ...

Hello all,

Seem to find myself in a bit of a bind. I currently have a 165c which seems
to have died (we'll find out for sure later this week). My options are to
try and get it fixed, or replace it with a 520c (warranty company will
replace it with the closest, currently available machine).

While this may sound great to many, I have some hesitations about replacing
the 165c. The primary one is FPU. 165c has, 520c has not. If you noticed my
.sig, I am a CAD/Graphics/Animation/(insert another FPU depedant task
here)/ type of guy. I have heard that some software (Infini-D, AutoCAD, and
a few others) do not work properly with pseudo fpu, although I haven't
confirmed this myself. Can anyone substantiate this, do you use any
rendering/cad software on a centris or lc040 quadra? Are there any other
software FPU tricks? Or can the cpu be traded in for a full portion 68040,
as was possible with the above mentioned desktop machines. Please be
specific.
(Note: please don't waste bandwidth by telling me about ppc upgrades, I
need a machine that can work for me now, not sometime next year!, although
the prospect of this makes me even more undecided :-)

To add to the confusion, I have looked through the performance charts in
the July 94 MacUser which rate the blackbirds. This, however has just
raised more questions than answers. For example, the 520c rated faster than
the 180c (which has the same 33 '030/fpu as my 165c) in all but the fpu
test. The question raised here is even without an fpu, the 520c kicked in
the Excel tests, which to me should give the fpu an advantage (didn't an
old version of excel tell you if an fpu was present or not?).

Enough lamenting about the cpu/fpu issues. The next question involves
modems. I had just purchased and installed a Global Village Gold powerport
(or whatever the name was, the internal version for a 165c)(Fabulous modem
by the way, all the reviews were bang on, excellent software, reliable,
etc). If I do decide to trade up to the 520c, will this modem fit? work? I
had heard that the blackbirds need a duo type modem, although I didn't
realize there was a difference between a powerbook and a powerbook duo
internal modem (isn't there just one apple express modem?).

Just to round out the question period:
- is the 520c actually capable of 16 bit colour at 640x400? can it do this
mirroring video to a 13" monitor?
- any insider info on ppc 603 availability? cost?

Thank you if you're still reading this post, I ramble when confused:-)
and I hope you can shed some light on this rather difficult situation I
find myself in.

As one last request, could all those who have some light to shed please
forward any replies via email, as I will probably not have a chance to read
this for a while (no machine) and I have cross posted a bit, adding to the
difficulty. I would be more than willing to compile a response list and
forward it to anyone interested in my findings.

Thanks again for your time, and happy surfing.

Hi, I had an old SE 20 mb drive (you know when going Overseas things
tend to shrink 40=> 20) with exactly this problem. Having a somewhat gungho
attitute to this and it being summer at the time, I took the
drive out from the case (It was originally internal, but I had
reboxed it in an external case) and left it in the sun for about
one hour, I then brought it inside hooked it up to the power
and spun it up for about one minute, which it did perfectly
(compared to not spinning up at all an hour before).
Anyway that was 1.5 years ago and it has worked faultlessly since!
IMHO I believe that I removed some of the lubricant from on top of the
platter when the drive was warm (and the lubricant was quite
fluid) leaving a thinner layer of lubricant on the platter.
I believe the original problem with those drives was the lubricant
was too thickly layered and/or too viscous, though I cannot be sure.

Subject: [Q] Recommendations for a backup system please

Dear Info-Mac ers,

I'm putting together a proposal for a Mac network backup system and would
appreciate comments and experiences of others. The network is Ethernet based,
with most of the backup traffic coming from a Quadra 840AV and a Quadra 950.
Remainder would be from IIsi, LC475 and LCIII machines. Physical network is
shared with DECNET from a VAX, some PCs and also TCP/IP access to the outside
world.

Best bet so far looks like Retrospect Remote with a 600MB MO drive through a
near-dedicated LC475 or LCIII. Is this a good setup? Anyone have experience
with this sort of thing and like to suggest (better) alternatives?

Thanks for any help in advance.

If there is sufficient response, I will post a summary.

Thank you.
I received an overwhelming number of replies. FileTyper was not the only file
recommended by most of the replies. For automatic drag and lock
there were others such as grouplock and lock-it. For the most part, the
replies I got were binhexed copies of the freeware and shareware. Thank you.
However, plese in the future think about the limited space some e-mailers
allow, and think of how 30 replies of binhex could overload the system.
No damage done, but please in the future, warn before sending binhexed files
over e-mail. TEXT FAQs and a single recommendation for an internet site with
path name are much shorter than most binhexes. A few people did send just the
recommended path, but most are overly enthusiastic about sending binhex over
mail without warning. I have sent binhex only with warning.
Not a flame, simply a message asking to reduce traffic on the Net.
Went 300 quota over budget. Once warned of an oncomming binhex file I can
clean my directory or send pick it up over FTP.
And above all Don't Panic! :-)

I do not think there is any chance of doing this. Zip.

However, I am sure that you can solve your problem by using any one of a
number of standard Terminal Emulation programs for the Macintosh. We use
VersaTerm from Synergy Software for exactly this purpose. VersaTerm maps all
of the keys on a DEC VT220 terminal (the one that originally used the LK201
keyboard) to the Macintosh keyboard (prefers the Extended Keyboard, but can
work with anything). They even provide you with a carboard overlay that shows
you what goes where; it fits over and around the function and editing keys.

VersaTerm is commercial software, and should be available from all the usual
sources.

You should be able to this functionality form an Terminal Emulator program
that provides a full VT220 emulation; and probably your needs will be met by
and program that provides just full VT100 emulation, of which there are
dozens.

Save the School District a ton of money by using David Harris's
(shareware--darn inexpensive) Pegasus mail system (runs on Mac, DOS, and
WinDOZE). It's the standard workstation mailer at UConn (3,500 stations
and growing) because the client's a freebie. David also has a POP server
that also runs on Novell servers along with Pegasus. I use Eudora 1.4.3
(there's also a WinDOZE Eudora) and it offers three advantages: 1)
Accessing mail via the POP doesn't count as a Novell login--we have a
license that permits 100 users to be logged in at a time, but we have about
143 users < not all at once> , 2) Since the POP runs over TCP/IP I can access
email without having to give up access to my local AppleTalk printer, and
3) I can run Eudora over a dialup and read/send mail from home
(sbaserv.sba.uconn.edu is a Novell server, and the time on this message
should indicate that I'm not at the office :)

If you can afford it. FirstClass is REAL pretty and easy to use (a natural
extension of the Mac interface). Nice colors, and FirstClass provides
chats, file transfer, and lots more services than just email.

I had the same problem, but I got DD 4.0 promptly after it was released.
What I did was fill out the " disputed charge" form from my credit card
company. They in turn told Symantec, to ship the product or they'd give me
my money back. Symantec shipped right away. Moral: get somebody bigger

No, I'm not asking for Elvis impersonators! I'm curious about impressions of
Technology Works GraceLAN series (Network Manager, Asset Manager, Update
Manager, Server Manager). I looked at it a couple of years ago, but felt it
was prohibitively expensive (at the time, they were charging per machine on the
network; it would have cost over $2K for Network Manager alone!). Now they're
offering it at a flat rate, so you'd py the same whether you had 20 Macs or 200
Macs on your network. I've ordered Network Manager and Asset Manager through a

Tom,
I have used GraceLAN for more than 2 years now and find that it is the one
tool I use most often for mixed Mac and PC and workstation environments.
It is well worth whatever it costs. I think an upcoming version will actually
allow you ping nodes on the net and get a report of network responsiveness.
Also try Server Manager, if anything else, it's really neat, and it of course
works very well.

Later,

Marty.

To anyone who really cares...

I just called MicroSoft today to find out the " latest and greatest" info on
ship dates for MS Word 6, Excel 5, PowerPoint 5, etc. (i.e. Microsoft Office
4.2, which is now being advertised). Apparently, the software is slated to
ship on 09 Sept. 94 for the Macintosh 68K machines, with PowerPC native
versions
following within a couple of months (this last bit is according to different
Mac mags, not MS).

Academic pricing for the office is $179.00 US " or better" (quote from the MS
rep!), so contact your campus reseller if you have one. They're not releasing
the Office CD version at academic prices, but you can get the CD version for
$15.00 if you buy the floppy version, according to the rep.

If you have more questions, dial 1-800-426-9400. Hitting " 4" at both the first
and second levels of the voice menu will get you a human (if it's not human,
it's the best expert system with voice synthesis on the planet...I don't think
MS is _that_ good yet!!). Hope this helps someone!

Subject: Mirrors woefully behind?

I read with interest the recent comp.sys.mac.digest posting which
listed sumex-aim mirror sites. I want to be a good net citizen, and to
direct my file-browsing activities to the mirrors.

But (there's always a " but" ), the documentation files on many of the
supposedly frequently updated mirror sites are woefully behind the
times. E.g., the recent-files.txt file on amug.org is literally 3
months old! There are similar problems on uunet and wuarchive, with
files out of date by anything from 2 months to 2 weeks.

Given sumex's somewhat problematic directory structure (still some
files to be moved to new directories, some files which have no
sensible classification), current recent-files and all-files are
absolutely necessary to make the archive useful. Does anyone know what
should be done to fix this problem?

There is, of course, little point in FTPing to the sumex to get the
latest recent-files.txt just so I can go find a mirror site (even if
the site itself is otherwise well-updated).

Have you tried CursorAnimator 2.0.1? It's possible to design your own. I
think you may still be limited to 16 by 16 pixels, but you can have all
sorts of cursors within that framwork (I'm partial to the left-handed

making it large.

The monitor is on for about 12 hours a day, 5 days a week.

I have been using a textured grey PPAT background for about 2 years.

Recently I noticed that the background sparkles, with little flickering
points of light (No, I do not know if there were 1000 of them).
I tried the DeGausing switch, but that didn't do anything.
I changed to a textured pink PPAT background and noticed that although the
flickering stopped there were many pinpoint concentrations of red or black
where there should have been pink.

1) What is going on?
2) How can I fix it?
3) How can I prevent if from getting worse / happening again?

Date sent: 2-AUG-1994 15:00:04

Hi:

A few weeks ago, I posted a question asking about SLIP for a Mac. Thanks to
all who pointed me to InterSLIP (one even sent it to me!).

I've got it on my Mac at home, and am having some difficulty, and I hope
someone else has run into it (and fixed it!).

I dial in to a Cisco terminal server. When I do it manually (with something
like Kermit), the steps to get SLIP running are:

CS500_1> slip
IP address or hostname: CHUCKM
Password: xxxxx
Entering SLIP mode.
Async interface is unnumbered
(Ethernet0)
Your IP address is...
MTU is 1500 bytes. Header compression will match your system.

When I try to duplicate this with InterSLIP, it gets to the point of telling me
" Requesting SLIP" , and then it complains, " Cannot invoke SLIP mode" . What is
strange is that it hasn't dropped carrier.

Has anyone else successfully used InterSLIP with a Cisco server? If so, would
you be willing to share your Gateway script with me? I am willing to mail you
my script, in case I have something obviously wrong with it.

Thanks for any help! Please mail me directly, and I'll share the answer,
should I get one!

Subject: Video on the Q630? (Q)

A Question for the video wizards out there...

My wife and I are very interested in replacing our SE/30 with one of these new
Quadra 630 machines (the specs look great), BUT what about this video
situation?

The Q630 claims to have 1MB of video RAM but will only support up to a 16 inch
screen with 8 bit color. A Q650 with 1MB of VRAM will support up to 21 inches
with 8 bit color.

What's the deal? By my calculations a 14 inch screen needs approx. 600K at 16
bits, and a 16 inch screen needs approx. 507K at 8 bits. What's up? Is this a
hardware limitation in the video circuitry (thus the reduced cost)? Why
doesn't the Q630 support a larger monitor?

We were really looking forward to purchasing one of Apple's new 17 inch
Multisync monitors; looks like we may end up with the new 15 inch version!

Thanks in advance,
Tom M.

I concur with your statements, but if you turn off automatic downloading of

the hypertextual features that are important not the cute PICTs.

And give Microsoft time to capture the remaining 15% of the market they
don't already have. Better for Apple and developers to solve problems AND
develop new hardware and software.

Actually, us users of older Macs rarely have serious problems until we
upgrade to applications that are newer than our Macs (especially if we've
added third party hardware such as accelerators and end up with CPU's that
don't match what the old ROMs were designed for).

I " catch up" every eight or ten years or so (by buying a leading edge
